Nature Study Lately

We've been following Handbook of Nature Study Outdoor Challenges for our nature study time. We often don't see the "subject" that we studied that day; but the awesome thing is that we might see that subject the very next day or week. One time we studied crickets and the next morning there was a cricket in our kitchen!

The flow of our nature study time has turned into:

1. Read about the "subject" from Handbook of Nature Study (I read it first on my own and then retell long parts to the kids or read shorter interesting parts as well as any poems included).

2. Look up pictures via internet or other books we might have.

3. Look at any links provided on the Outdoor Challenge website.

4. Spend some time outside ~ usually around our neighborhood, sometimes at a naturey park or pond.

5. Observational drawing of something we collected or sometimes the kids choose something from a book or the internet to draw.

6. Research something we have questions about (I've been better at this in times past than I have been lately).

Jonathan has been very interested in birds since we started reading Burgess Bird Book. He took the picture of the ducks and then drew two of them.

Jonathan, what a great job you did drawing the Mallard Ducks!! I did not know you could draw so well. I will show them to Papa. We are proud of you. Love you, Mimi

I really enjoyed seeing your process and how you often observe the subject studied soon after your reading. Love that!

Great job on the mallard drawings too! Thanks for sharing your link with the carnival.
